Ex-minister accuses Israel of racism
Former Israeli education minister Shulamit Aloni slams mistreatment of the Palestinians by Tel Aviv, accusing it of ethnocracy and racism.
The former education minister, who also served as minister of communication and minister of science and the arts, in her new book, lamented what she called a retrogression of democracy from Israel's primitive definition at the time of its formation.
She described the 1992 legislation of the so-called law of "Human Dignity and Liberty", which calls Israel a Jewish, democratic regime, in direct contradiction to the Israeli declaration of independence in 1948.
In her book published this week, Aloni condemns the domination of the apartheid system in the West Bank, the regime's constant refusal to a peace deal for decades and Israelis atrocities in the Palestinian territories.
The assassination of Israel's envoy to London Shlomo Argov in 1982 was only an excuse for the occupation of Lebanon in the same year and the expulsion of Palestinian resistance from there, while the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) was committed to a ceasefire in the northern border of the occupied territories, Aloni revealed.
She further linked the 1995 assassination of Israel's then prime minister Yitzhak Rabin to legislation of racist laws since the 1980's, raising the possibility that SHABAK (Israel security agency commonly known as the Shin Bet) might have been behind the killing.
Aloni recalled the instigations against Rabin and accused Jewish settlers of ' Mussolini's fascism'. "The Israeli rightists and settlers are not after peace but they want the whole Holy Land without Arabs or mosques," she said, calling democracy a ploy to give Israel an acceptable image in the world's eye.
The former minister criticized Israel's use of military for murdering and expelling the Palestinians.
In 1998, Shulamit Aloni was awarded the Emil Grunzweig Human Rights Award by the Association for Civil Rights in Israel.
Aloni is currently on the board of the Yesh Din organization, established in March 2005, which seeks to oppose the continuing violation of Palestinian human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories.
